Mahagauri and the River of Light
Parvati waited and prayed through every season, and patience made her shine.
Long ago, Parvati went deep into the forest to pray. She sat very still on a flat rock and closed her eyes. She was praying to become Shiva's wife, and she was ready to wait as long as it took.
The rains came, and she kept praying. The autumn leaves fell on her hair, and she kept praying. Snow drifted down, and still she sat, calm and patient. After many, many years, she was covered in dust and leaves. But her heart stayed bright.
At last, Shiva came walking through the forest. He was smiling. "Your patience is the strongest I have ever seen," he said. From his hair flowed the river Ganga, sparkling and clear.
Shiva gently poured the cool river water over Parvati. Splash! The dust washed away. The leaves floated off. And as the water touched her, it turned into soft white light.
Parvati opened her eyes. She was glowing, bright and white like jasmine flowers, like the moon on snow. Everyone called her Mahagauri, which means the very bright one. A gentle white bull came to stand beside her.
On the eighth day of Navaratri, Maha Ashtami, families remember Mahagauri. They offer white flowers and ask for a clean, bright heart. And they remember: when you keep trying patiently, your goodness will shine through.
Patience and steady effort make us shine, even when no one is watching.
