Katyayani and the Sage's Wish
An old sage wished for a daughter of light, and she grew up to be the bravest of all.
Deep in a green forest lived a kind old sage named Katyayana. Every morning he prayed beside his little hut. "Mother Goddess," he said, "please come to my home as my daughter."
One morning, a soft golden glow filled the forest. Inside the light was a little smiling girl. The sage's eyes filled with happy tears. Because she came to Katyayana's home, everyone called her Katyayani.
Katyayani grew up kind and curious. She fed the deer and laughed with the parrots. She listened to her father's stories under the trees. But inside her, a bright courage was quietly growing.
Far away, a big bully named Mahisha was making trouble. He was as stubborn as a buffalo, and he chased everyone out of their homes. Even the gods could not stop him alone. "What shall we do?" they worried.
So all the gods joined their light together. Red light, blue light, gold light, all of it flowed into Katyayani. She stood up tall on her golden lion, calm and strong. "Don't be afraid," she said. "Together, we can stop him."
Katyayani faced the bully, and she did not back down. In the end, Mahisha's trouble was over, and everyone could go home again. On the sixth day of Navaratri, we remember Katyayani. When many good hearts join together, no bully is too big.
Courage grows strongest when many hearts join together for what is good.
