Jamara and the Blessing Tika
Asha planted a tray of seeds on the first day of Dashain, and on the tenth day her family's love grew into a blessing.
On the first day of Dashain, Asha helped her grandmother plant barley seeds in a small tray of soil. "Will they really grow?" Asha asked. "They need water, a little darkness, and a lot of patience," said Grandmother. "We call them jamara."
Every morning, Asha sprinkled a little water on the tray and covered it with a soft cloth. She peeked on the second day, and the third. Only dark soil! "Be patient," said Grandmother with a smile. "Good things grow quietly."
On the ninth morning, Asha lifted the cloth and gasped. The tray was full of tiny, soft, golden sprouts, bright like little sunbeams! "Jamara!" she cheered. The whole room smelled fresh and sweet.
On the tenth day, Vijaya Dashami, the whole house was clean and shining. Everyone wore new clothes. Mother mixed rice, yogurt, and red color into a soft tika paste. Uncles, aunts, and cousins came from near and far, and the house was full of laughter.
Asha sat in front of her grandparents. Grandmother pressed the red tika onto her forehead and tucked a few golden jamara sprouts into her hair. "May you be happy, healthy, and kind," she said. Asha bowed to touch their feet, and Grandfather smiled and gave her a small gift.
Then Asha gave a little jamara to everyone in the family, one by one. They sat together on the warm veranda and shared sweet sel roti. On Vijaya Dashami, we remember that goodness wins, and that love, patience, and family make every day bright.
Patient care makes good things grow, and the blessings of family are the best gift.
