The Crow Who Carried the News
An imagined adventure about a crow who brings news two days before Rama returns on Diwali.
In a little village near Ayodhya lived a crow named Kalu. Kalu was black and shiny, with bright little eyes. And Kalu was loud! "Caw! Caw!" he called every morning. "Oh, Kalu," the children laughed, "you are the noisiest bird in the whole village."
One morning, Kalu flew higher than ever before. Far, far away, on a long dusty road, he saw three people walking. A prince with a bow. A lady with a kind smile. And a brother walking close beside them. "It is Rama!" Kalu gasped. "Rama is coming home!"
Kalu flew back as fast as his wings could go. He landed on the courtyard wall. "Caw! Caw! Caw!" he called, louder than ever. The children looked up. "Kalu is so excited," said little Maya. "Maybe someone special is coming!" Then a messenger ran by. "Rama is coming home in two days, on the third day of Tihar!"
Everyone hurried to get ready. The children swept the courtyard clean. They put marigold garlands on the doors. They set out little clay lamps in long, neat rows. And Kalu watched from the rooftop, his head tilted, very pleased with himself.
"Kalu told us first," said Maya. "We must say thank you." So she put some white rice on a leaf plate. She added one bright marigold flower. She set it on the roof for Kalu. "Thank you, noisy friend," she whispered. And Kalu ate every single grain.
Two days later, on the third day of Tihar, the lamps glowed for Diwali, also called Lakshmi Puja. Rama came home. Kalu flew above the shining lanes, cawing happily. Kalu's adventure is an imagined story. In Nepal, families honour crows as messengers on Kaag Tihar. They offer food to the birds with gratitude. Our little story celebrates that kindness.
Every friend has a gift, even the noisy ones, and it is good to say thank you.
