Rahula and the Water Bowl

Little Rahula loved playing in the quiet bamboo grove. One sunny afternoon, he told a cheeky little fib to some visitors just for fun. He thought small tricks did not hurt anyone. The wise and gentle Buddha saw this, knowing it was time for a loving lesson.

Buddha called young Rahula over and asked for a bowl of clean water. Rahula ran quickly to fetch a simple wooden bowl filled with cool, sparkling water. He set it down softly at his teacher's feet. Buddha washed his feet carefully while Rahula watched with curious eyes.

Afterwards, Buddha pointed to the dusty water left in the bowl. He asked Rahula if anyone would like to drink it now. Rahula shook his head and said it was dirty. Buddha explained that telling fibs makes our hearts murky, just like that dusty water.

Next, Buddha tipped the bowl all the way over until every drop poured out. He turned the bowl upside down with a gentle hand. He told Rahula that lying throws away our inner goodness, leaving our hearts empty like the flipped bowl. Rahula listened closely, understanding the truth.

Finally, Buddha asked Rahula to turn the bowl right side up again. Rahula filled it with clear, sparkling water, promising to always speak honest and gentle words. Buddha smiled brightly and rested a hand lovingly on Rahula's head. Their hearts felt light and peaceful in the warm sunlight.
